Ray: A Life Underwater (por Danny Cooke)
It’s a rare thing to find an underwater video with a well crafted story. Fortunately this video stands apart.
Sometimes I really miss the diving days of my early twenties, when I would spend weekends plunging into the dark watery abyss. I distinctly remember so many visceral sensations from that time: the miserable cold that would make my delicate ectomorphic constitution scream, the excitement of being able to soar through forests of kelp and rock formations, the anxiety of running out of air, the taoist like surrender to the tidal movements, the fear that the tickle in my chest was a tiny embolism or maybe just a muscle twitch, and the surprise of having a moment with a harmless seal or shark. It was good for me to spend close to an hour on flying hikes through a world where so much was unfamiliar and only my thoughts could provide a reference narrative. As cliche as it sounds I think some of us like to go into the unfamiliar to remind ourselves of how warm and comfortable our normal lives can be. Alternating between the mundane and the hostile but sublime seems a requisite for a balanced life, at least for me.
TEENAGE
Based on a groundbreaking book by the punk author Jon Savage, Teenage is an unconventional historical film about the invention of teenagers. Bringing to life fascinating youth from the early 20th century—from party-crazed Flappers and hipster Swing Kids to brainwashed Nazi Youth and frenzied Sub-Debs—the film reveals the pre-history of modern teenagers and the struggle between adults and adolescents to define youth.
